There is little doubt that Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Ernie Els and Retief Goosen have great golf swings. All have won US Open Titles. Their swings have stood their tests in time. What key aspect do they all share in common? A study of their swings and a review of their early golf training and instruction bring to light a focus on maintaining a steady head.
Jack Nicklaus gives much credit for his “rock steady head” to his first professional instructor, Jack Grout. Grout was frustrated with young Jack and his “bobbing head.” During one session, he grabbed Nicklaus firmly by his curly callaway diablo edge driver blonde hair, and had Jack hit balls for such a length of time that young Jack cried. But Nicklaus got the message. His steady head for most of his swing and particularly through the impact zone is a Nicklaus trademark.
